Signal ist ein plattformübergreifender Messenger, der vom Signal Messenger (einer 501(c)(3) Nonprofit-Organisation) entwickelt wird. Die Software adressiert das Problem mangelnder Privatsphäre in der digitalen Kommunikation durch den Einsatz des quelloffenen Signal-Protokolls für eine standardmäßige Ende-zu-Ende-Verschlüsselung. Zu den Kernfunktionen gehören verschlüsselte Textnachrichten, Sprach- und Videoanrufe sowie der Austausch von Medien ohne Werbung oder Tracker. Die Organisation finanziert sich ausschließlich über Spenden und Grants, um Unabhängigkeit von großen Tech-Konzernen zu wahren.
